Sports Chiropractic is a specialty area within chiropractic. To practice as a Sports Chiropractor generally requires the Chiropractor to undertake additional post-graduate qualifications in sports injury management. The additional study allows the Sports Chiropractor to draw from a greater set of tools when assessing and treating injuries to effectively treat injuries in all areas of the body, not just the spine.
Jarom completed his Chiropractic studies in Auckland, New Zealand. His keen interest in sport led him to enroll and complete a Post graduate Diploma in Sports & Exercise Medicine and Masters of Health Science through the University of Otago, Christchurch School of Medicine...
Jarom has worked with a variety of elite and professional sportsmen and women across a number of sports including:
Although our specialist training equips us well for sporting injuries, the same treatment approach is extremely effective on non-sporting injuries. Sports chiropractic at Sport and Spine follows current best practice guidelines in injury evaluation and management, and includes a unique functional movement evaluation that has been developed to identify underlying causes and tailor the most effective treatment options to the individual.
A multidisciplinary approach to injury management is common in a sports chiropractic practice and Sport and Spine is no different. We regularly work with like-minded health professionals at the top of their field, including Sports Physicians, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Massage therapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionists and other specialists as required. This recognition of interdisciplinary strengths helps us work toward the best possible injury solution for the individual. We will let you know if we can help, or do our best to point you in the direction of someone who can.
The chiropractic adjustment techniques used at Sport & Spine vary from very low force to more manual techniques. While they are usually not painful there may be some minor discomfort experienced depending on the extent of the injury. The soft tissue mobilisation techniques utilised at Sport & Spine can be tender, similar to that of deep tissue massage, however this is always tailored to the tolerence levels of each individual patient.

You may be aware that during a manual chiropractic adjustment a cracking or popping noise can often occur. This noise is created by the release of gas that is dissolved in the lubricationg fluid of each joint in your body. When there is a pressure change inside the joint, gas will be released and a noise will follow, much the same as when you “pop” the top off a sparkling grape or champagne bottle. This noise is not necessary for treatment to be successful, but is rather a byproduct of what happens when performing the adjustment.
Generally the initial chiropractic appointment is a little longer than follow ups and will last approximately 30 minutes. Normal follow up appointments are around 15 minutes.
Yes, for injury based complaints, chiropractic treatment at Sport & Spine is subsidised by ACC. As ACC does not cover the entire cost of the treatment, a surcharge will be required to pay at the end of each treatment visit. See: Fees
The answer to this question is specific to each case. This will become clearer after a health history and physical examination is completed on the first visit. At Sport & Spine you will never be pressured into an upfront long term treatment plan. Recommended treatment plans will be determined by your intial presentation and modified as you progress.
The costs of treatment at Sport & Spine will depend on whether the presenting complaint is an injury covered by ACC or whether it is a private consultation. The appointment times at Sport & Spine are generally longer than those at the average chiropractic clinic, however we have endeavoured to keep our pricing competitive in an effort to allow accessibility to the general public. The additional studies in sports and exercise medicine equip us well to deal not only with neck and lower back pain, but also acute or overuse injuries of the upper and lower limb including: disc injuries, nerve entrapment syndromes, tendinitis/tendinosis, sprains/strains, impingement syndromes and post-surgical rehabilitation. We have a special interest here at Sport & Spine in tricky chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as shoulder impingement syndrome, tennis/golfers elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, patellar/achillies tendinosis and plantar fasciitis, just to name a few. The combination of chiropractic adjustment techniques, soft tissue mobilisation and specific home care advice has proven a very effective treatment combination for stubborn chronic conditions like these.
The short answer to that question is that sports chiropractors undertake an additional postgraduate qualification in sports and exercise medicine to become a specialist sports chiropractor. For more information see: Sports Chiropractic
